Zero In On a Topic Want someone to focus on an issue? First, zero in by asking a closed-ended question then ask an open ended one to get the person to elaborate. For instance, you want to find out what Bob knows about an account status. You ask, “Bob, do you understand how we’re proceeding with the Hansen account?” If Bob answered yes, you would ask, “Would you please explain it to me so there’s no misunderstanding.” If Bob answered no, you would ask, “What is it about the account that you don’t understand?” This is easier and more effective than trying to ask the open-ended question first.
