Ultimatums

It's said that bosses aren't always popular – consider the following example.

A collection was once taken as a going away present for the departments domineering boss.

One department member was overheard asking, "When is he leaving?"

Swift came the reply, "No time soon but we want to be ready when he does!"

While it's important to respect others - it's important to remember that at times, you can't do your job without annoying them.

You're better off trying to persuade or negotiate a settlement with others because when you use ultimatums you could win the battle yet lose the war. He that complies against his will is of his own opinion still. Tell when you have to, sell your ideas when you can.

When you're clear about what you want done and allow others the freedom to choose how, they more willingly participate. Having said that ultimatums are sometimes necessary.

Five things you should know about ultimatums:

1. Don't like them.
2. Sometimes they're necessary.
3. Exercise great caution when using them.
4. They can be used in the following situations:
· You have the power or support of those that do.
· You're right.
· You're accountable for the results.
· The result is more important than the relationship.
· You can't live with any other decision.
· As a last resort.
5. Use as follows:
· At the end of a negotiation or discussion when all else has failed.
· Say you appreciate her concerns.
· Use a palatable (phrase is it as a request or favor?) not challenging tone.
· Don't burn your bridges by attacking the person – focus only on the facts and say what you want.
· Put it in writing.
· Hope for the best.
