Listen for your reflection Ever paraphrased what someone said only to be told, "That's not what I said!" If so, you've established a negative interaction and that's not what you want. Paraphrasing is repeating what the other person said in your own words. Reflecting is repeating what the other person said using their exact words. Next time establish a positive interaction by reflecting first and paraphrasing second. By reflecting the person's key words first you're saying, "I heard what you said," then by paraphrasing you're saying, "This it what it meant to me. " You'll encounter less resistance, greater understanding and a more natural flow to your conversation.
