Reflect for them; Paraphrase for you

Ever paraphrased what someone said only to be told, "That's not what I said!"

You're not alone. Paraphrasing is taking what the other person said and putting it into your own words. Reflecting is repeating their words, exactly as they said them since their words have a specific meaning for them.

Reflect their key words or phrase first so they know you heard them, then paraphrase what was said into your words so the other person knows if you understood them.

You'll encounter less resistance and achieve greater understanding.
