Don't Burn Your Bridges The other day a gentleman made an offer on a fridge and stove and concluded with "this is my final offer, take it or leave it." Because of his tone and attitude, I would have been tempted to tell him, "take a hike." even if his offer had been reasonable - which it wasn't. And at another point in my life might have added a few choice four letter superlatives. But instead said, "Thank you, I appreciate your offer. Unfortunately, because I stand to loose too much I'll have to decline. If you can reconsider your offer please give me a call. I appreciate your checking it out." He left with a Buddy Holly version of, "That'll be day!" Too many times when we give or receive an ultimatum the offended party's ego and emotional decision-making process kicks in and forces the person to walk away from what might be a reasonable or close to reasonable offer. Leave the door open to future negotiation. Memorize this line, "Thank you, I appreciate your offer. Unfortunately because... I'll have to.... If you can reconsider then please... . I appreciate your taking the time to consider this." Oh, by the way - he called back and we made a deal. |
