Not everyone cares to hear what you would do or how you would handle a situation. In fact offering your solutions might alienate your listener.
I was shopping for a digital movie camera. A clerk saw me looking at the cameras and proceeded to tell me about all the features of all the cameras and what I should get is what he purchased. Of course it was top of the line and seemed quite complicated.
Had he asked me what I needed I would have said the only feature I must have was an external sound input. This was so I could hook up a microphone to record my presentations. I would of continued that I need something simple to use. If he then asked if I was interested in some recommendations that met my requirements, I'd have been much more receptive to his advice.
It is OK if I tell you what my point is? My point is to try to understand what someone's need is, then get their permission to offer your two cents worth. They'll be much more receptive to receiving it.
